A Turkey Diddy
A turkey is a funny bird,
His head goes wobble, wobble.
But, turkeys only know one word,
and that’s Gobble, gobble, gobble!
How the Turkey Got Its Name (Maybe)
Christopher Columbus believed the bird he discovered (the turkey) was a type of peacock, so he called it a “tuka”, which is “peacock” in some Indian languages. The turkey is actually a type of pheasant and the Native American’s name for turkey is “firkee”. It has been said that this is how turkeys got their name. Although, every time a turkey is a bit scared it makes a "turk, turk, turk" sound. I wonder if they are just trying to tell us their real name? Maybe we really have “Turk” for Thanksgiving dinner! |
