Thanksgiving Indian Headdress
Long ago, the Pilgrims came to America looking for religious freedom and new land. They sailed from England in a big ship called the Mayflower, and they landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts. They met friendly Indians who helped them learn how to grow food and live off of the land. Because they were very blessed with all of their needs, they decided to have a special time in which they could give thanks to God for all he had made possible for them. They made a big feast and invited all of their Indian friends. The Indians came dressed in all of their tribal wear. They wore colorful headdresses made from leather, beads, and feathers. Just for fun, below are the instructions to make an Indian headdress, but instead of leather and feathers, we will use paper and glue.
You will need: |
|
Construction paper |
Clear tape |
Glue |
Scissors |
Ruler |
Pencil |
Instructions: (You may need the help of Mom or Dad)
First you make the band by cutting out a long strip of paper that is 1½ inches wide and 24 inches long. Fit the band around your head, tape the band to fit at the middle of your forehead, then cut off the access. Use the pattern below to cut out as many different shapes of colored paper as you wish and glue them onto the band. Using the feather pattern, cut out four to six feathers of different colors. Fold all the feathers in half and make a fold down the middle careful not to fold the bottom tab. Use your scissors to cut slants all the way around the feathers but don’t get too close to the middle fold. Carefully, tape or glue the feathers to the inside of the band. Have fun! Now you can pretend you were a friend to the Pilgrims, too.
